These exams are widely recognised all over the world in academic institutions as well as in companies.
The Goethe Institute exams have equivalence with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): from level A1 for Beginners to C2, the highest language level.
Each exam is divided in four parts: an oral comprehension, a reading comprehension, a writing test and, finally, a speaking exam, which might take place in a different day.
The exam is passed with a minimum of 60 points (60% of the total points) once all four parts have been done. A minimum of 45 points must be obtained in the written exam, and 15 in the oral. In any other case the exam will be considered as failed. The certificate does not expire.
